About Recreational Therapy Alabama

Recreational Therapy Alabama, PLLC was started in the Fall of 2024 when a Recreational Therapist named Maddie Prather moved to Huntsville and wanted to create more service options for the special needs community. Maddie Prather is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) with a Master of Science in Recreational Therapy from Indiana University. During her time as a CTRS in Fort Wayne, Indiana, she was a service provider to individuals of all ages on the Medicaid Waiver. She has worked with a wide range of health conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Traumatic Brain Injury, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities both verbal and nonverbal. For each individual’s treatment plan, Maddie has used many different therapeutic interventions and activities including physical exercises, aquatic fitness, group outings, cognitive functioning games, coping skills training, adaptive sports, and community integration. In 2022, she was a speaker at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Therapeutic Recreation Conference where she presented on the experience of traumatic events in people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Maddie aims to improve Huntsville and greater Alabama’s community resources for the special needs community through the empowering work of Recreational Therapy.
